The Salcombe Community Appraisal of 1999 highlighted
a number of concerns, many of which have been adressed.
At a meeting hosted by the Countryside Agency information about a grant
available for the preparation of an action plan was passed on to the
delegates attending. It was felt by STC that it would be appropriate
to consider updating the Appraisal if the people of Salcombe thought
that it would be a good idea. It was recognised that the exercise would
not automatically provide ideas that could be funded immediately but
the information could be used as a bargaining tool for funding.
On Thursday 9th October 2003 Salcombe Town Council
hosted an open evening to which everyone in Salcombe was invited. 280
people attended and were asked if they would like to put forward their
concerns and issues and to decide if they would like to take part in
the formation of the Salcombe Town Plan. The response to this meeting
was very encouraging and the information collected has formed the basis
of the questionnaire that followed.
A steering group made up from some town council representation and all
sections of the community was formed from this meeting, to start putting
the questionnaire together and decide how the concerns raised for Salcombe
can be achieved. The questionnaire has been designed to bring everything
up to date and get the opinions of the whole of Salcombe Community. A
comprehensive Rural Housing Needs Survey was also included to be answered
by full-time residents only.
2000 questionnaires were hand delivered to every address in the town.
The response has been very good and the answers obtained have been analysed.
A report has been prepared and the information obtained will be made
available to everyone. Then we can start to think if the projects identified
are viable and then how can they be implemented
Salcombe has been well supported financially in this project. The CA
gave a grant of £5,000; DCC, SHDC and STC have each donated £500.
The people of Salcombe, both full-time residents and second home owners
have given time and effort as committee members and volunteers, helped
prepare the printed questionnaires for delivery, have delivered them,
collected them when completed, and finally sorted them for analysis.
